January 2023 Intro Class
January 7, 2023 - February 4, 2023
12:00 pm - 2:00 pm
Start your training with Ars Gladii at our Introduction class. During this 4-week class, students will learn the basics of fencing with the longsword – how to cut, thrust, and move with a historical weapon. They will also be introduced to the surviving historical manuscripts that form the basis of our art and how we operate as a school. This course culminates with students trying out their new skills by cutting targets with a sharp sword.
Included in the price of the class is a HEMA-rated fencing mask which is the student’s to keep at the end – their very first piece of HEMA gear! If you already have a HEMA-compliant fencing mask, select the NO MASK ticket. Please note that if your mask does not meet our specifications, you will have to buy one from us at the beginning of class at cost. To be compliant, the mask must be made by a major fencing supplier (Absolute Fencing/Force, PBT, Leon Paul, etc.), the mesh made of stainless or hardened steel (3-weapon rated), be free from defects, dents, or warps, and properly fit to the student. All other equipment is provided.
Students will want to wear athletic clothing including flat shoes (running/cross training shoes are just fine). We do keep it cool in the winter and warm in the summer – we suggest students bring a hoodie (colder weather) or wear light, cooling/wicking materials (warmer weather). Thin, light gloves such as batting gloves, golf gloves, or “Mechanix” style work gloves are highly recommended. Lastly, students need to bring their own filled water bottle as there is no water onsite during the pandemic.
We have moved to a 4-week, 2hr per class schedule to allow for more time for tournaments, events, etc. This is the same (even expanded) content as our original Intro class, just condensed in the calendar. Please pay attention to the following dates before registering: Classes run 1/7, 1/14, 1/21, and 2/4. There is NO CLASS on 1/28.
Ars Gladii is a full-time HEMA school in Garden City, MI. We maintain a 3200 sq. ft. facility dedicated to training historical fencing and weapon combat.
